Today marks 17 years since the beginning of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, a conflict that resulted in loss, displacement, and a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of Georgians.
In a statement released today, the U.S. Embassy in Georgia commemorated the anniversary, calling it “a day to remember the victims of war, those who were displaced, and those who lost their lives fighting.”
In its message, the United States once again reaffirmed its steadfast support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
“Today marks 17 years since Russia's invasion of Georgia, a day to remember the victims of war, those who were displaced, and those who lost their lives fighting. We see how deeply Georgians continue to honor the memory of their heroism. We stand in solidarity with the Georgian people and reaffirm our unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement reads.
