A total of 3486.5 thousand tons of waste was generated in Azerbaijan in 2020. 25% of the waste was used for obtaining energy. The use of household waste produced 200.6 million kWh electricity during 2020. 24.6% of waste resources generated by industry and other sectors were used as raw materials.
In 2020, 3486.5 thousand tons or 6.4% more waste was generated Azerbaijan compared to the previous year. 67.4 percent of them were solid domestic waste, 32.6 percent of them were produced as a result of the production activities of enterprises, reads the recent data of the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
74.5% of 2350.0 thousand tons of solid domestic waste generated last year was transported to landfills for disposal, 25.0% was used for obtaining energy, 0.5% was sold in the country. The use of household waste produced 200.6 million kWh or 2.4% more electricity than in 2019.
24.6% of the waste resources generated in industry and other sectors of the economy were used as raw material in enterprises, 20.7% were sold in the country, 1,8% was exported, 8.4% was transported to landfill for disposal, 44.5% remained in enterprises.
As a result of the production activities of the enterprises, 0.1% less compared to 2019 or 317.2 thousand tons of hazardous waste was generated and their share in the total amount of waste was 9.1%. 53.8% of the waste was generated in mining enterprises, a large part of which was accounted by enterprises located in Baku. Last year 61.4 thousand tons of hazardous waste was completely neutralized, including the remains formed in previous years.
