In a debate on Wednesday, MEPs are set to address the outcome of Georgia’s disputed parliamentary elections, including alleged Russian interference.
According to the statement, the political groups agreed on the change in the agenda. The European parliamentarians must confirm the decision.
"Parliament expresses concern about democratic decline in Georgia. MEPs are discussing the results of disputed parliamentary elections in Georgia, including Russia's alleged interference.
Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Georgia to protest against the outcome of the contested parliamentary elections in October 2024, which saw the ruling Georgian Dream party claim victory amid allegations that Russia helped to rig the vote. Demonstrators demand, among other things, a new election to be held under international supervision and a proper investigation into alleged voting fraud.
After the announcement of the ballot outcome, representatives of 15 EU governments expressed deep concern about the situation in Georgia, condemning violations of international standards for free and fair elections. Leading MEPs also pointed to irregularities identified by international observers and demanded a proper investigation of the reported violations" the statement said.
A resolution will be put to a vote during the plenary session on 25-28 November.
