Trust in the Georgian national currency has grown significantly over the years, as reflected in the increasing share of deposits denominated in the local currency, according to Natia Turnava, President of the National Bank of Georgia.

She made the statement at the presentation of the commemorative postage stampGeorgian Money - National Currency - 30 Years,” issued to mark the 30th anniversary of the GEL.

The commemorative stamp, prepared by Georgian Post and issued by the Stamp Commission under the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, features design elements of GEL banknotes and symbolizes three decades of the national currency’s development.

If 15 years ago the share of deposits denominated in GEL was only 30%, today it is already 50-50%, which means a greater share of our population and businesses entrust their savings to the GEL. The national currency has become a reliable means not only of payment, but also of saving and investing, I am confident this trend will continue,” Turnava noted.

She also thanked the Georgian Post and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development for their contribution to issuing the anniversary stamp, emphasizing that the series will hold a prominent place in Georgian and international philately.

Deputy Minister of Economy Guram Guramishvili and Director General of Georgian Post Giorgi Eradze also addressed the event.

The presentation took place at the Ilia Chavchavadze National Library of Georgia, the historic site where the country’s first central bank, the State Bank of Georgia, operated in 1920–21.

The new commemorative stamp entered circulation in September 2025 and is available at Georgian Post service centers nationwide. The stamp was designed by Baadur Koblianidze.
