By the initiative of the Minister of Justice, Georgian citizens living abroad will be able to receive ID cards free of charge and passports with a significant discount – for 50 USD. Thea Tsulukiani announced this at the briefing in the Ministry. The aim of the action is to improve the voter lists by the 2018 elections and include true and trustworthy biometric data of our citizens living abroad. Georgian citizens, living abroad will be able to get ID cards during 3 months and discounts for passports will last for two months.
It is notable that the action doesn’t involve any age limitations. Within the framework of the action, any Georgian citizen of any age living abroad will be able to receive the ID documents. “The passport and ID card action is a significant support for our compatriots living abroad, which will create additional motivation for them to renew their ID documents; and the Public Service Development Agency will have an opportunity to update the data presently existing in the database.
Not having an effective ID documents causes problems for citizens living abroad, including for enjoying their voting right. After issuance of passports and ID cards, biometric data of our compatriots living abroad will be sent to the unified database, which will facilitate updating of voting lists and improving its credibility. Apart from this, if passport or ID card has expired, Georgian citizens living abroad can not cross border or use electronic services, offered by the government of Georgia.
