Rustavi City Court has sentenced a man to eight years in prison for defrauding 41 people of GEL 844,755 by promising to import various makes and models of cars from Japan at favorable prices. The court fully accepted the evidence presented by the prosecution and found the defendant guilty.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant deceived victims in Rustavi into transferring large sums of money to bank accounts he specified, claiming the funds would be used to import vehicles. Despite receiving the payments, he failed to deliver the cars and fraudulently appropriated the money.
The defendant was charged under Article 180 of Georgia’s Criminal Code in seven episodes involving fraud causing significant damage and 34 episodes involving fraud committed on a large scale.
In addition to the eight-year prison sentence, the court ordered the defendant to compensate the victims and prohibited him from leaving Georgia until the damages are fully reimbursed.
