AG Energy has issued a statement regarding the Gogni Wind Power Plant, a planned 187 MW renewable energy project representing an investment of more than $200 million. According to the company, the electricity generated by the project will be fully consumed within Georgia and will supply power to approximately 240,000 households.
The company said major wind energy projects are being developed in forested areas in many countries around the world. Such projects require land preparation, including clearing areas for access roads and turbine platforms. In the case of the Gogni project, the affected area will account for no more than 3% of the total licensed territory, while 97% of the forest area will remain undisturbed.
According to AG Energy, the project will contribute to Georgia’s energy independence and help address the country’s electricity deficit, particularly during the winter months. The company said it will implement measures aimed at minimizing the project’s environmental impact and preserving and restoring the affected ecosystem. These include:
Replacing diseased trees and planting at least an equal number of healthy trees in the affected areas. AG Energy said this requirement was set as an additional condition by the National Environmental Agency and goes beyond the legal requirements.
2. The company also said it will pay GEL 5.604 million in compensation for the removal of trees, describing the amount as unprecedented. According to AG Energy, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture intends to use the funds for additional afforestation measures.
The construction phase is expected to employ around 400 people, with 90% of the workforce comprising Georgian citizens and a significant share coming from the local municipality. Once operational, the Gogni Wind Power Plant is expected to contribute more than GEL 5 million annually to the local budget through property taxes, providing the municipality with additional resources for infrastructure projects.
AG Energy said the project will fully serve Georgia’s domestic electricity needs and could play an important role in strengthening the country’s energy independence and security.
