Agriculture Ministry Proposes New Dairy Labeling Rules to Boost Local Production

23232

The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture held a meeting with dairy sector representatives to discuss changes to the technical regulations on milk and dairy products, focusing on additional labeling requirements. Deputy Minister Lasha Avaliani emphasized that the initiative aims to support local production and provide clearer information to consumers.

Industry representatives shared feedback on implementation timelines and labeling standards. Each product will indicate the raw materials used, encouraging demand for local milk and offering incentives for farmers. “In the long term, this will benefit the rural economy and attract investment,” said Giorgi Khatiashvili, executive director of processing company Caucasus Genetics.

The National Food Agency presented results of 2025 inspections on production, processing, and sales, and outlined plans to expand 2026 laboratory testing to around 150 chemical and microbiological parameters.

The meeting was attended by the head of the National Food Agency, Giorgi Iakobashvili, and the director of the State Laboratory of Agriculture, Irakli Guledani.
