Anti-Corruption Bureau to be fully abolished

Starting from March 2, 2026, the Anti-Corruption Bureau will be fully abolished, and its functions will be transferred to the State Audit Office — Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced this today at a briefing.

Papuashvili said that the Anti-Corruption Bureau, in its current form, was “a model imposed from the outside.

”As a reminder, the Anti-Corruption Bureau was created on December 15, 2022, on the basis of legislative amendments to Georgia’s Law “On Combating Corruption.”

The bureau was established to help Georgia obtain EU candidate status, as part of the European Commission’s 4th priority requirement.“Our goal is to strengthen the constitutional framework of the governance system and optimize state resources. Fighting corruption is one of the government’s top priorities. In recent periods, a number of significant steps have been taken in this direction. The process involves the Government Administration’s Efficiency Department, the State Audit Office, the Anti-Corruption Agency of the State Security Service, and the Prosecutor’s Office,” Papuashvili stated.

According to him, the Anti-Corruption Bureau currently mainly handles the monitoring and collection of declarations of public officials, political parties, and NGOs.

However, under the governance-aligned vision, this component will fit more effectively into the constitutional framework of the State Audit Office, as a “higher and more independent institution.”

Razden Kuprashvili has held his position since the day the bureau was established.

Last week, reports emerged that Kuprashvili had resigned. In response, he told the media: “As long as this agency exists, I will be its head.”
