Applicants’ Choice Not Restricted Under “One City – One University” Principle - Deputy Minister

ზვიად გაბისონია

Deputy Minister of Education, Zviad Gabisonia, clarified that his statement at the Economic Policy Committee on December 8 was misunderstood. He emphasized that under the “one city - one university” principle, applicants’ rights to select a list of universities and faculties will not be restricted.

Gabisonia explained that during the committee session, only his answer was reported, not the question, which led to confusion.

According to the Deputy Minister, the principle aims to streamline faculties within the same city. For example, in Tbilisi, multiple law faculties currently exist across state universities like Tbilisi State University, Ilia State University, and Georgian Technical University. The new model plans to unite these faculties into a single program, while applicants will still be able to indicate both state and private universities in their lists.

The discussion of amendments to the Law on Higher Education has officially begun in Parliament. The document, registered yesterday, is set to be considered under an accelerated procedure by the “GD” government.
