Armenia could well become a transit country between India and Europe, as well as between India and Russia. This was stated by the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during a meeting with journalists visiting New Delhi on a familiarization visit from Eurasian countries, reports NEWS.am.
According to Jaishankar, the number of trade and transit corridors worldwide will increase significantly in the next 10 years.
"We have the North-South Transport Corridor, which includes the Chabahar Port, as well as other countries. There is the Middle East Corridor, but many more corridors will be created, as the existing ones were established 70-80 years ago," he added.
He emphasized that production, consumption, and natural resources are changing, and there is a need to create new corridors to connect new territories.
The minister pointed out that Armenia, due to its geographical location, is situated between Europe and India. Therefore, in this sense, there are opportunities, highlighting that the two countries have "very good relations" and many possibilities for deepening bilateral cooperation.
"Bilateral trade has increased in various areas, cultural cooperation has expanded, and there has been progress in the political system," Jaishankar noted.
Earlier, BMG reported that India signed a 10-year contract with Iran for the development and operation of the Iranian port of Chabahar, where Armenia plans to open an operational point.
Recently, the Iranian Ambassador to Yerevan, Mehdi Sobhan, stated Armenia's interest in opening a representative office in the Chabahar Port, which, according to him, would facilitate trade with India, Iran, and South Asian countries.
