Armenia does not rule out the possibility of importing gas from Azerbaijan in the future. This statement was made by the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan, on April 25, sparking heated discussions in the Armenian segment of social media.
Simonyan believes that this issue should be discussed and even considers the possibility of constructing a gas pipeline for gas purchases not only from Azerbaijan but also from Iran.
"I consider it positive if Armenia buys gas from Azerbaijan; we need to discuss this issue. Even now, part of the gas we purchase from the Russian Federation is Azerbaijani," he said.
However, it is worth noting that despite the existing gas pipeline from Iran to Armenia, it does not have transit significance and does not provide wide access to gas for all consumers in the country. Gazprom Armenia CJSC, a 100% subsidiary of the Russian holding Gazprom, is the monopolistic supplier of natural gas from Russia to the domestic market of Armenia.
Earlier, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, stated that Armenia would be able to purchase Azerbaijani gas in the future.
According to him, Azerbaijan practically fully supplies Georgia with advantageous and preferential gas. That is why, Aliyev believes, Armenia will also be able to buy Azerbaijani gas.
