In the first seven months of 2024, over 4,800 electric vehicles were imported into Armenia, according to data from the State Revenue Committee (SRC) of the country. This figure indicates a rapid growth in the popularity of eco-friendly transportation in the republic.
It is important to note that this volume of imports has already consumed about 65% of the annual duty-free quota for importing electric vehicles. Out of the initially allocated quota of 7,400 vehicles, only 2,563 units remain.
This quota was agreed upon within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and allows Armenia to import electric vehicles from non-EAEU countries without paying customs duties. The decision is aimed at encouraging the transition to eco-friendly transport and developing the necessary infrastructure in the country.
The rapid depletion of the quota in less than eight months highlights the high demand for electric vehicles among Armenian consumers. This may be attributed both to the growing environmental awareness of the population and the economic benefits of using electric transport.
BMG reminds that the Armenian government’s decision to exempt electric vehicle imports from customs duties has already led to a significant increase in their numbers in the country. So far, owners of 8,000 electric vehicles have taken advantage of this benefit.
This measure is part of a broader strategy to develop eco-friendly transportation in Armenia. The government has set a target to increase the number of electric vehicles in the country to 50,000 units within the next six years.
