The Ministry of Economy of Armenia has recorded significant changes in the country’s potato trade balance, with Armenia transforming from an importer to an exporter of this product.
As reported by Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan, Armenia exported 2,500 tons of potatoes in the first nine months of this year, whereas there were no exports at all during the previous year.
Potato imports have also undergone significant changes. According to the minister, while 7,500 tons were imported last year, this year only 500 tons have been imported over the past ten months, and those were exclusively for seed material.
However, an early snowfall in the Gegharkunik region, the main potato-producing area, has created difficulties for farmers who have not yet completed their harvest.
"We responded quickly to the situation and held a working meeting with the governor. To speed up the harvesting process, the ministry and the regional administration will provide farmers with the necessary equipment as long as weather conditions allow," Minister Papoyan stated.
