Armenia plans to register "Armenian Brandy" as a geographical indication as part of the rebranding of Armenian cognac, announced Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan.
Papoyan stated that as a result of the work conducted with the company BEKPO and their research, it was proposed to use the name "Armenian Brandy" as the preferred option for Armenian cognac.
"The new name was presented to the European Union at the 5th meeting of the Armenia-EU Partnership Committee on Trade Issues held on October 17, 2023," Papoyan said at a joint meeting of the National Assembly's Committees on European Integration and Financial-Credit and Budgetary Affairs on June 4, where the annual report on "The Execution of the State Budget of the Republic of Armenia for 2023" was discussed.
The minister noted that the new name would allow promoting, advertising, and selling Armenian brandy with the implementation of precise mechanisms for quality control and oversight of production.
To achieve these goals, the European Union will provide support in the amount of 2.9 million euros over two years.
