Asparagus producer cooperative “Ozaani” expects a strong season this year, with output projected to rise by around 25% to about 15 tons, according to its head, Jaba Gigolashvili. He says growth is driven by recent expansion of plantations, despite weather-related delays at the start of the season.
Cold and rainy conditions postponed the harvest, and active picking only recently began. Gigolashvili noted that the season is now at its peak, with intensive harvesting expected to continue for another one to two weeks. He also said product quality remains high, although prices fluctuate.
The farmgate price currently ranges between 12 and 15 GEL per kilogram, while retail prices in supermarket chains are higher. Most sales are conducted through large retailers, including Nikora, Carrefour, and Agrohub.
“Ozaani,” which currently cultivates around 8 hectares, continues to expand its plantations every one to two years. With an additional 2 hectares planted last year, the cooperative plans to reach 10 hectares soon and eventually enter export markets.
