Georgia’s Revenue Service and the Central Criminal Police prevented an attempt to smuggle GEL 50 million worth of heroin into the country, authorities reported. A total of 157 kilograms of heroin was seized, and an Iranian citizen has been detained in connection with the case.
Investigators said the narcotics were concealed in a truck entering Georgia via the Red Bridge border checkpoint from a neighboring country. The drugs were hidden in a special compartment and wrapped in marble slabs.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing operational and investigative actions to identify and prosecute other individuals involved. This is considered one of the largest heroin smuggling cases in Georgia. The investigation is being conducted under Articles 260 and 262 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carry sentences of up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
Authorities thanked the joint efforts of the Central Criminal Police and Revenue Service Customs Department for successfully uncovering the operation.
