Aviation Fuel Demand in Georgia Grows by 5–10% Annually Despite Regional Challenges

თვითმფრინავი

Demand for aviation fuel in Georgia continues to rise steadily, even as the country faces geopolitical uncertainties and a reduction in flights from the Middle East. According to Giorgi Andguladze, Commercial Director of Georgia’s leading aviation fuel importer, Georgian Petroleum, the market has maintained strong momentum, with annual growth consistently reaching 5–10%. He shared the insights during BMGTV’s aviation segment Talks on Aviation.

Andguladze noted that Tbilisi International Airport remains the key hub, accounting for roughly 75% of total aviation fuel sales. At the same time, Kutaisi International Airport is emerging as a rapidly developing market, driven by the increased activity of low-cost airlines. “Overall growth indicates that aviation in Georgia is expanding, which is closely linked to rising tourism, business travel, and broader economic activity,” he said.

The company representative also explained how aviation fuel pricing is determined. Prices for airlines are tied to the international Platts index and are adjusted every two weeks based on global market fluctuations. “Any increase or decrease in the index is directly reflected in local aviation fuel prices through these regular updates,” Andg uladze stated.

He added that additional cost components—such as hedging, transportation, and insurance—have risen significantly but do not impact airlines directly. “These expenses fall entirely on the supplier, like Georgian Petroleum, meaning airlines are shielded from these financial risks,” Andguladze explained.
