Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to Build Trans-Caspian Fiber-Optic Cable

Fiber-Optic Cable

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan plan to lay a Trans-Caspian fiber-optic internet cable. According to Kazakh media, Kazakh engineers have already begun studying the seabed where the first underwater communication line between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan will pass.

Specifically, specialists are examining the seabed’s relief, the composition of the soil, and determining whether there are any obstacles along the future route. Similar work is also underway on the Azerbaijani side.

The project envisions laying a 380 km fiber-optic cable along the Caspian Sea floor between Sumgait (Azerbaijan) and Aktau (Kazakhstan). The underwater communication cable, with a capacity of 400 terabits per second, will enable the transfer of large volumes of data. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

The project is being implemented through a partnership between Azerbaijan’s AzerTelecom and Kazakhstan’s Kazakhtelecom. Technical supervision and consulting support are being provided by the U.S.-based Pioneer Consulting.
