Bachiashvili’s “Bitcoin Case” to Be Taken to Supreme Court

გიორგი ბაჩიაშვილი

The “Bitcoin case” will be appealed to the Supreme Court, Bachiashvili’s lawyer, Davit Jandieri, told BM.GE.

The matter concerns today’s (August 12) decision by the Court of Appeals, which upheld the Tbilisi City Court ruling sentencing the former CEO of the “Co-Investment Fund,” Giorgi Bachiashvili, to 11 years in prison.

Speaking with us, Bachiashvili’s lawyer said that the decision did not come as a surprise to them and fit the same pattern held by the Prosecutor’s Office and the court of first instance. According to him, the case is fabricated.

“This is a fabricated case that has nothing to do with the interest of justice. Today’s ruling by the Court of Appeals once again confirmed this. We will continue our fight together with our democratic partners both inside and outside the country so that this injustice does not go unanswered. It is very important that the public always be informed about these processes, because public opinion is crucial in a situation where the Georgian judiciary is effectively captured and there is no hope left for fairness or for the enforcement of the law by the justice system,” Jandieri said.

He added that the verdict will be appealed to the Supreme Court, after which the way will be open to international bodies, including the European Court of Human Rights.

The lawyer also noted that in other cases — including those related to cryptocurrency, the Mtvari HPP, and illegal border crossing — no hearings are scheduled at this stage.
