Vazha Beridze, founder of Baraka LLC, has proposed not only stricter price regulation, but a complete reorganization of Georgia’s economic system. Speaking after a meeting with producers hosted by the Price Commission, Beridze emphasized that price formation is crucial for the country and highlighted the limits of liberal economic policies globally and in Georgia.
The government has recently taken action on rising prices. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze noted in December 2025 that high markups by distribution companies and supermarkets, which account for an average of 86% of food prices from border to shelf, are a key issue. Following this, a government commission on prices was created in early January 2026 to examine food, medicine, and fuel costs, with a planned completion by April.
In late January, commission representatives met with supermarkets, while the State Security Service and Finance Ministry’s Investigative Service collected documentation from multiple distribution and retail networks. The commission is scheduled to hold upcoming meetings with fuel and pharmaceutical companies.
Beridze stressed that creating analytical groups and taking a systemic approach is necessary to address the broader challenges of economic reform, not just temporary price controls.
