Berekashvili: “Markets Offered the Best Prices on 15 Products, and I’m Impressed”

Georgian Dream MP Shota Berekashvili says he is “impressed” by the prices that major supermarket chains offered on 15 basic products after the Price Commission issued its recommendations. Speaking in Parliament, he thanked retailers, distributors, and producers for adopting the Greek-style “household basket” model.

According to Berekashvili, instead of aggressive interventions like those in Romania and Hungary - where governments set price caps - the commission followed the French and Greek approaches, which rely on competition and market dynamics. He said that, in response, supermarkets introduced “the best prices” on 15 essential goods in the first stage.

The MP argued that rising prices are not caused by excessive corporate profits but by inefficient business models in the country, and that systemic reforms are needed to fix this. He added that a reform plan has already been drafted and that the government will soon take important steps.

“What could be corrected in the short term has already been done; the rest requires reforms, and we will carry them out,” Berekashvili said.
