Nino Chkhobadze, Chairperson of the Georgian Green Movement, has praised the Georgian government's decision to delay the ban on plastic (PET) bottles by four years. She emphasized that total bans are unsuitable unless they consider economic and social factors, as these must align with environmental goals. The delay is seen as a positive step, but Chkhobadze stresses the need for a clear plan to ensure the transition is smooth and economically feasible.
Chkhobadze highlighted the importance of finalizing key legislation, particularly the "Packaging Materials Regulation," which has been delayed. This regulation, based on extended producer responsibility, is essential for advancing waste separation and recycling. She argued that waste must be treated as a resource, as effective waste management depends on proper sorting and recycling processes.
The transition to modern waste management, according to Chkhobadze, requires updates to infrastructure and strong public involvement. She called for a clear and well-planned approach, noting that both the government and businesses must play active roles in establishing a system that can handle waste effectively. Key issues include improving technical capabilities for waste collection and addressing the challenges of landfills and transfer stations in mountainous regions.
Chkhobadze also warned businesses not to become complacent during the four-year grace period, as global standards for plastic waste are tightening. She emphasized that companies must act now to ensure that when the ban is implemented, it won't be economically damaging for them.
