Businessman Lasha Papashvili says individuals involved in business should refrain from political engagement, commenting on proposed rules restricting public political activity by companies. Speaking to journalists, he said he has never had the intention of being politically active.
Papashvili argued that everyone should focus on their own profession, adding that businesspeople are free to enter politics if they choose, but should not mix the two roles. He noted that political competition tends to intensify ahead of elections in many countries, including in the West, but said it should not interfere with business activity.
He also said he continues to express opinions and “oppose everyone” when necessary, describing it as part of his role in advocating for business interests such as lower taxes and greater support from the state.
Under the proposed legislative changes, businesses would be prohibited from engaging in public political activity unrelated to their operations. The draft law introduces fines starting at GEL 20,000 and escalates to criminal liability for repeated violations, including prison terms for individuals and possible liquidation of legal entities.
