Despite the economic crisis in 2020, the volume of cargo shipments by the Georgian Railways has increased.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the cargo turnover amounted to 11.1 million tons, which was 0.2 million tons or 1.8% up comparing to 2019.

Despite the increase in freight shipments, the railway was still at a solid loss in the first 9 months of 2020. The company received 363.5 million GEL in revenue from services, while its net loss was 118 million GEL. The full financial data for 2020 is not published yet.

Cargo turnover is reduced to the Ports. In 2020, the total volume of cargo shipped by Georgian ports amounted to 16.9 million tons, which was 1.7% less comparing to 2019. The main reason for this decrease is the decline in cargo turnover of Poti Port, the largest port in the country.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the volume of shipments was increased in other ports in 2020.

• Poti Port - 7.4 million tons, decrease of 13.9%;
• Supsa Marine Terminal - 4.2 million tons, increase of 13.5%;
• Batumi Seaport - 3.5 million tons, increase of 9.4%;
• Kulevi Terminal - 1.7 million tons, increase of 6.2%.

As for the number of container shipments to the ports, it amounted to 490 thousand, which was 24.2% down y-o-y.
