Construction of the Bakhvi Hydropower Plant (HPP) cascade on the Bakhvistskali River in Ozurgeti Municipality is entering its final stage. According to Giorgi Abramishvili, managing partner of Energy Solution and director of Bakhvi HPP, all three plants in the cascade are expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.
The USD 90 million project, implemented by Energy Solution in partnership with a US-based investment fund, will have a total installed capacity of 46 MW. Once operational, the cascade will generate around 200 million kilowatt-hours annually for Georgia’s energy system.
The project consists of three plants:
- Bakhvi 1 – 10.9 MW capacity, 43.1 GWh annual output
- Bakhvi 2A – 11.6 MW capacity, 45.5 GWh annual output
- Bakhvi 2B – 23.8 MW capacity, 88.8 GWh annual output
“The largest station, with a capacity of 24 MW, is essentially complete and ready for launch. We are now waiting for the State Electric System to finalize the transmission line. The second plant will be ready by late October or early November, and the third by year-end, weather permitting,” Abramishvili told BMGTV.
Beyond technical progress, Abramishvili emphasized the importance of transparency and community engagement in energy projects.
“It is very important to start open discussions with the local population from the very first day, not only after obtaining construction permits. This is the key advice I would give to investors,” he noted.
