From 1 April, several courier companies in Georgia increased their local delivery tariffs. OnWay founder Tamar Gogolashvili told BMG that the adjustment was unavoidable due to sharply rising fuel costs affecting the entire sector.
According to her, delivery fees have increased by 50 tetri to 1 GEL, depending on parcel weight and category. “Low-cost categories, such as parcels up to 5 kg, went up by 50 tetri, while heavier categories - 10 kg and above - rose by 1 GEL. In Tbilisi, delivery now starts from 6.5 GEL, and in the regions from 11.5 GEL, with door-to-door service,” she said.
Gogolashvili noted that companies tried to maintain prices for as long as possible, but soaring fuel costs pushed operational expenses to a critical level. “Fuel is one of the main cost drivers in the logistics industry. We covered the extra costs for some time, but continuing like this became impossible,” she explained.
She added that the slight increase in local courier tariffs will not impact retailers as heavily as the global logistics crisis. “International air freight has become much more expensive, with far less competition than on the local market. Retailers feel that cost increase much more. Compared to that, the local price adjustment is minor,” Gogolashvili said, adding that OnWay notified customers about the changes 10 days in advance.
