It’s a priority for us that Georgia joins the EU as smoothly and swiftly as possible, the German Ambassador Peter Fischer stated.
According to him, Georgia can make progress on the way to the European Union.
“We want Georgia to be a member. This year in December, there will be a meeting of the European Council, which are the 27 heads of state and government. They will decide about the next step. Last year, the step was candidate status. This year, the step is opening accession negotiations.
The commission has formulated nine points for Georgia. I just said inside, please, dear Georgian friends, hurry up, deliver on the nine points as quickly as possible, because this year the schedule will be very short. There will be elections in Georgia, there will be elections for the European Parliament. So after summer, people will be busy with other things.
So try to get as much done before the summer to deliver on the nine points. And then in December, we can decide to open negotiations and move forward smoothly and swiftly for Georgia to be a member of the European Union,” Peter Fischer declared.
