Georgia is set to expand its deposit insurance system, increasing the maximum insured amount for both individuals and legal entities from GEL 30,000 to GEL 50,000, effective April 1, 2026.

This marks the third increase since the program’s launch. Initially, deposits were insured up to GEL 5,000, later raised to GEL 15,000 in 2020, and to GEL 30,000 in 2024.

According to the Deposit Insurance Agency, as of August 2025:

  • The volume of insured deposits stood at GEL 11.3 billion, of which GEL 10.3 billion belonged to individuals and about GEL 1 billion to legal entities.
  • Regular insurance contributions by commercial banks and microbanks amounted to GEL 6.28 million in August alone.
  • Since 2018, banks have contributed a total of GEL 282.38 million to the fund, which is invested in treasury securities.

The expansion of the insurance limit is aimed at further strengthening public trust in the banking sector and enhancing the financial security of depositors.
