Despite a 30% increase in car re-exports in the first half of 2025, Georgia’s automotive market remains in surplus, according to the Association of Auto Importers.

The association’s head, Aleksi Noniadze, told BMG that demand still lags behind supply, with many vehicles imported in previous years, particularly in 2023, remaining unsold.

“Over 60,000 cars were imported in 2023 and a significant portion is still on the market. Summer may bring relief, as it’s typically the most active season,” Noniadze said.

He noted that Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, and Armenia remain the key re-export destinations, but growing foreign dealer activity, especially from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, has increased competition for local importers, cutting into their profits.

“The market is growing, but largely due to foreign intermediaries using Georgia as a transit hub. This leaves less profit for Georgian dealers and the local economy.”

In January–June 2025, passenger cars topped Georgia’s imports, totaling $1.66 billion, a 10% increase year-on-year. Re-exports of cars reached $1.2 billion, up 30% from the same period in 2024.
