Domestic tourism in Armenia has been growing at an average annual rate of 20% since 2020, stated Anahit Mkrtchyan, Head of the Tourism Policy Department of the RA Tourism Committee, in an interview with Public Television.
She noted that in the first quarter of this year, the number of domestic tourists increased by 21.5%, or 50,000 people, reaching a total of 280,000.
The majority of tourists—71.3%—choose entertainment and leisure, with their number growing by 19.2% compared to the previous year. There is also positive growth in other areas: business tourism increased by 31.1%, educational tourism by 19%, and health tourism by 54.9%.
The most popular destinations for domestic tourists this year have been Goris, Tsaghkadzor, Aghveran, Dilijan, Stepanavan, and Lake Sevan during the summer season.
To stimulate domestic tourism, Mkrtchyan believes it is necessary to organize promotional events in the regions, including festivals. Last year, with the support of the Tourism Committee, 16 various festivals were held in different regions of the country.
