ECHR judgment spotlights Georgia's territorial integrity, sovereignty - PM

“The European Court holds Russia fully responsible for mass intimidation of Georgian locals residing across the occupied territories, their detentions and restrictions to free movement,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to the PM, the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) emphasises Georgia’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty. As Irakli Kobakhidze stated, Georgia won “a pivotal victory in the Strasbourg Court.”

“Once again, Russia’s responsibility for actions inconsistent with the European Convention, which manifests itself in the so-called borderization and the continued violation of human rights, was confirmed at the highest judicial level. The ECHR ruling emphasises Georgia’s territorial integrity and enhances the state’s sovereignty,” he said.

Irakli Kobakhidze thanked the Justice Ministry, State Security Service, General Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs and all who contributed to “this decisive victory.”

On April 9, the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) published its judgment in the case of Georgia vs Russia. ECHR ruled on multiple violations of the European Convention concerning the human rights toll caused by the hardening of boundary lines after the 2008 conflict.
