Education Minister: Higher Education Reform Is an Economically Sound Project

Georgia’s Minister of Education and Science, Givi Mikanadze, says the higher education reform is an economically sound project aimed at addressing the country’s shortage of qualified professionals. Speaking at a press briefing at the Government Administration, he noted that many businesses are currently forced to hire specialists from abroad, which significantly increases production and service costs and ultimately affects consumers.

According to the minister, the reform is driven by its economic benefits. Through continuous research conducted in cooperation with the business sector, the government will determine which professions are in highest demand, allowing the education system to better align with the needs of the labor market.

Mikanadze explained that the current academic offerings often fail to produce professionals with the level of skills required by today’s economy. As a result, some fields face an oversupply of graduates, while others suffer from a severe shortage — a challenge that affects both the private sector and public institutions.

The minister emphasized that the reform’s goal is to enhance quality, increase competitiveness, and ensure that Georgia can rely on highly qualified local talent rather than importing labor. He stressed that this will strengthen employment opportunities for Georgian citizens and help them secure higher-paying jobs, making the reform an economically sound initiative for the country’s future.
