The information portal ekalata.gov.ge has between 2,500 and 4,000 daily unique users, Competition and Consumer Protection Agency Chairman Irakli Lekvinadze said. He noted that the platform helps consumers find lower prices and plan purchases.
Lekvinadze said the portal also tracks savings and price changes for 13 basic food and 10 non-food products. He expects usage to increase after new features and mobile applications are launched, followed by wider promotion.
According to Lekvinadze, the combined price of 13 basic food products was around GEL 43 when the portal launched in July. It fell to a low of GEL 35 in August and currently stands at around GEL 37, illustrating price competition between retail chains and potential consumer savings.
Lekvinadze also said the agency is ready to enforce a proposed law banning unfair trading practices in the food supply chain if Parliament adopts it. He said the legislation could particularly benefit local farmers, small businesses and startups with limited resources to compete with large suppliers.
