Electricity imports were 93% up in Georgia amounting to 414 million kWh in January 2021. Closing of Enguri and Vardnil HPP cascades for rehabilitation is the main reason for imports increase. Total imports in January totaled $ 10.4 million.
Imports were made from Russia and Azerbaijan. Namely, the volume of electricity purchased from Russian was 262 million kWh, while the volume of Azerbaijan electricity made up 152 million kWh.
The share of imports in the total consumed electricity made up 35%, while in January 2020 the share of imports was only 18% of the total consumption.
Total electricity consumption in January made up 1.18 billion kWh, down 1% year-on-year.
Enguri HPP is currently undergoing a critical rehabilitation process, funded by the EBRD loan. The goal of rehabilitation is to increase the efficiency of the plant.
The rehabilitation will be completed in May and as a result, the annual output of the station should increase by 100-120 million kWh.
