Georgia’s energy cooperation with the European Union is crucial for the development of the country’s energy sector, according to Tornike Darjania, head of the Solar Energy Association. Speaking on TV-program Analytics, he said that adopting the rules and regulations of the European Energy Community would make Georgia’s energy market more predictable.
Darjania noted that Georgia has been moving closer to the EU and the Energy Community since 2017, taking on obligations aimed at improving energy security, supply reliability and creating a free market. According to him, alignment with European regulations would reduce risks for investors, especially in areas involving new technologies such as solar energy.
He highlighted challenges in integrating solar power plants into Georgia’s energy system, saying the sector needs clearer rules and stronger institutional support. Darjania said that transparent market mechanisms and the launch of a fully operational energy exchange remain among Georgia’s key obligations as a member of the Energy Community.
According to Darjania, one of the main challenges for renewable energy development is the lack of energy storage systems. He said that while previous net metering regulations helped expand solar energy and supported the construction of small renewable energy facilities, further progress requires investment in storage and battery technologies to address the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources.
