For the first time, the EU will provide Armenia with €10 million from the European Peace Facility. The aim of the assistance, given to support the Republic of Armenia, is to enhance the logistical capabilities of the Armenian Armed Forces and to aid in improving the protection of civilians in crisis and emergency situations.
According to Armenpress, the decision was made within the framework of the EU-Armenia partnership and is based on shared values aimed at promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Armenia and the South Caucasus. It is also intended to increase Armenia's resilience and accelerate the operational interoperability of its armed forces in the future, in the event of potential participation in international military missions and operations, including those organized by the EU. The support will ensure the provision of a full tent camp for a battalion-sized unit.
According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, security is an important element of bilateral relations with Armenia. The High Representative noted that the EU has a mutual interest in further expanding dialogue on foreign and security policy and is also considering Armenia's future participation in EU-led missions and operations.
"The EU is committed to expanding a comprehensive political and economic partnership with Armenia based on the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement and further strengthening relations in all dimensions. This includes intensifying dialogue and cooperation in foreign and security policy, which also encompasses the Common Security and Defence Policy," stated the EU Council press release.
The European Peace Facility was established in 2021 as part of the Common Foreign and Security Policy. The fund enables the EU to finance actions aimed at enhancing the capacity of third countries, as well as regional and international organizations, related to military and defense matters.
