The Tbilisi City Court convicted Mikheil Saakashvili, the former President of Georgia, for illegally crossing the country’s state border, resulting in a sentence of four years and six months in prison.
Considering the cumulative nature of prior convictions, Judge Mikheil Jinjolia ultimately imposed a total sentence of 12 years and six months.
The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs apprehended Saakashvili on October 1, 2021, for a border transgression. Earlier, on March 12, the Tbilisi City Court had sentenced him to nine years in prison for the embezzlement of a substantial sum of budget funds.
