GD Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili discussed a new legislative initiative at today’s Bureau meeting. He stated that an exact analogue of the American FARA has been registered in parliament and is scheduled for discussion.
According to Papuashvili, the bill will be aligned with the Georgian legal framework during the parliamentary review process.
“The new legislative initiative is a draft law package – the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The essence is that it’s a word-for-word, comma-for-comma translation of the American FARA. During the parliamentary review process, it will be adapted to fit within the Georgian legal framework. This ends any false or misleading narratives that some have been spreading, both internally and externally, about Georgian laws.
This bill is a verbatim translation. Every word, every term, every comma, and every period is identical to the law in force in the USA, and the public and interested parties can observe through ‘track changes’ what will be modified in this law.
This will dispel any speculation that the Georgian Parliament is adopting a law inconsistent with international standards. I request that it be referred to the Legal Affairs Committee for discussion,” Papuashvili stated.
