Georgia’s Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili says that the country is working with international partners to build a modern transport network that will serve the region for decades and enhance the efficiency of the Middle Corridor.
He made the statement following approval by the World Bank Group’s Board of Directors of a $372 million credit line for Georgia, which is part of a larger $751 million transport infrastructure package. The financing will support the purchase of new locomotives for Georgian Railways and the construction of a four-lane highway in Kakheti between Badiauri and Bakurtsikhe.
According to Khutsishvili, the project is important not only for Georgia’s economic development but also for strengthening regional connectivity and ensuring more diversified and secure global supply chains. He said upgrading rail and road infrastructure will improve the performance of the Middle Corridor and reinforce its role as a key transit route between Europe and Asia.
The broader investment package also includes planned financing from the Asian Development Bank ($175 million) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ($182 million), and covers railway modernization, electrification works, institutional strengthening of Georgian Railways, as well as major road construction projects including the Gurjaani–Telavi section.
