In recent months, the Department of State has been involved at every level to make clear to the Georgia government that it is going in the wrong direction, - US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Joshua Huck stated at the hearing held in the US House of Representatives regarding Georgia.
According to him, the government of Georgia is sharply deviating from the country's democratic trajectory, and the "Foreign Influences" law is a symbol of the anti-democratic deviance.
"This hearing is being held at an extremely important time, both for our bilateral relations and for the future democracy of Georgia.
The Georgian government is sharply deviating from the country's democratic trajectory and putting its Euro-Atlantic aspirations and relations with the US at risk. It passed undemocratic bills, demonized civil society, launched disinformation and rhetorical attacks against the US and European partners who have supported Georgia for decades.
The "Foreign Influences" law, which was adopted by the ruling party, Georgian Dream, on May 28, is a symbol of this anti-democratic deviance. This law, which is a reflection of the law adopted in Russia, is designed to silence critical voices, to "blacken" independent non-governmental activists and journalists, and to subjugate Georgia's vibrant civil society through fear.
In recent months, the Department of State has been engaged at all levels to make clear to the Georgian people that we continue to support their democratic Euro-Atlantic aspirations, while clearly telling the Georgian government that it is going in the wrong direction," Huck said.
