Former MP Claims Anti-Corruption Drive Is About Power Struggles, Not Reform

დიმიტრი ცქიტიშვილი

Former Georgian MP Dimitri Tskitishvili has criticized the government’s recent anti-corruption campaign, arguing that it reflects internal power redistribution within the ruling elite rather than genuine efforts to combat corruption.

Speaking to BMGTV’s Tsertili program, Tskitishvili linked the case against former Georgian Railway CEO Davit Peradze, who is accused of embezzling 17.4 million GEL and illegally handling 22,120 tons of metal, to broader political dynamics within the ruling “Georgian Dream” party.

He claimed the developments are connected to efforts to pressure former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and former State Security Service head Grigol Liluashvili, suggesting the process reflects internal disputes over financial flows and influence.

Tskitishvili further argued that the cases represent selective enforcement rather than systemic reform, saying that targeting isolated individuals does not address broader corruption structures. He also questioned the independence of Georgia’s Anti-Corruption Service, which operates under the State Security Service, arguing that this undermines public trust in ongoing investigations.

He compared the situation to other high-profile financial crime cases, claiming that publicized enforcement actions are often politically driven and do not reflect a comprehensive anti-corruption strategy.
