Levan Akhobadze, former deputy head of Georgia’s State Security Service (SSSG), who is charged with accepting an especially large bribe, has been released on GEL 500,000 bail. The decision was made by Judge Nino Tarashvili. The court hearing is being held behind closed doors.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Akhobadze is accused of accepting a bribe in an especially large amount. Investigators allege that the former SSSG deputy head initially demanded GEL 500,000 from a businessman in exchange for assistance, but the parties ultimately agreed on GEL 250,000.

According to the SSSG’s Anti-Corruption Agency, Akhobadze received GEL 250,000 in cash as a bribe in April 2024. The case concerned assistance with transporting 40 million Russian rubles across Georgia’s state border.

Akhobadze, who served as deputy head of the SSSG under former chief Grigol Liluashvili, was arrested on May 22, 2026, on bribery charges. He held the position from 2021 until April 2025. If convicted, he faces 11 to 15 years in prison.
