The Municipal Development Fund has signed a GEL 70 million contract for the design and construction of infrastructure rehabilitation works in the resort town of Abastumani. The agreement was awarded to “Saba Construction”, which was the only company to participate in the tender.
The project was announced under a Design-Build model and includes both design services and full-scale construction and rehabilitation works. The first phase will involve preliminary studies to identify infrastructure requiring restoration.
Planned works include the restoration of historically and culturally significant buildings, development of tourism and recreational facilities, road and street upgrades, as well as construction and reconstruction of retaining walls and bridges. Authorities say the project aims to preserve Abastumani’s heritage while introducing modern technologies to improve infrastructure and tourism potential.
In recent years, more than GEL 280 million has already been spent from the state budget on Abastumani’s rehabilitation and surrounding road infrastructure. Despite this investment, the resort has not yet fully reopened, and completion timelines remain uncertain as the newly signed contract has a two-year implementation period.
