For the first time, five small solar power plants have been added to the Georgian electric power system this year, with a total installed capacity of 10 megawatts.
Nino Mchedlishvili, director of “Alazani Solar” and “Kakheti Solar,” the companies behind the project, told BMGtv that the construction of the solar plants took two years from start to finish.
“The research phase lasted 9–12 months. Excluding the net stations, this was our first project of this kind. In total, it took two years to implement,” Mchedlishvili said.
The five stations are located in the Dedoplistskaro, Sighnaghi, and Akhmeta municipalities, each occupying three to four hectares. According to Mchedlishvili, Kakheti was chosen for its energy resources and relative lack of generation facilities. Careful site selection ensured minimal interference with agriculture and proximity to substations to reduce energy losses.
The Ministry of Economy announced in July that the Georgian State Electrosystem would connect these five solar plants to the national grid. The agency is actively integrating green energy, alongside ongoing construction of 125 MW wind farms with a total investment of $195 million. Once operational, these projects will further strengthen Georgia’s energy system in the coming years.
