The Georgian government has allocated up to GEL 53,000 from its reserve fund to develop a unified digital platform that will provide consumers with information on discounted essential goods available across the country.
According to a government decree signed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the project will be implemented by the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency. The initiative aims to create a single digital space where citizens can easily access information about discounted basic consumer products.
The allocated funding will be used to develop the “Social Basket and Discounted Products” web platform and purchase the related services necessary for its operation and maintenance. The government said the platform is intended to improve consumer access to information on price reductions for essential goods.
The project follows the publication of a report by the Parliamentary Price Commission on May 1, which concluded a nearly three-month review of price formation mechanisms in Georgia’s FMCG sector. The report found that food prices are influenced by multiple factors throughout the value chain, from producers to retailers and consumers, and highlighted the need for greater transparency in the market.
