The European Commission has published its 2026 assessment report on Georgia, focusing on migration trends and the functioning of the visa-free travel regime.

According to the report, Georgia remains among the leading visa-exempt countries whose citizens most frequently apply for asylum in EU member states. In 2025, Georgian nationals submitted 15,130 asylum applications across the European Union.

The Commission positively assessed the implementation of the readmission agreement with the Georgian authorities. However, the high number of unfounded asylum applications remains a concern. Last year, 10,445 Georgian citizens returned to the country following orders to leave the EU, making Georgia the second-largest country worldwide in terms of returns from the European Union.

The European Commission stressed that Georgian authorities must take effective measures to address the issue of citizens illegally staying in the EU and submitting unfounded asylum claims. This is one of the key requirements under the EU's Visa Suspension Mechanism (VSM).
