Georgia and Latvia signed a joint statement on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Latvia and Georgia, within the framework of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The declaration was signed during the bilateral meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani and his Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

According to the Statement “Historical ties, common European values and shared interests provide a strong foundation for relationship between Latvia and Georgia. In the course of the past 25 years Latvia and Georgia have developed close partnership both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, built active people-to-people, and regional contacts, exchanged numerous high-level visits and strengthened cooperation in the fields of defence and security, transport and economy, agriculture, education and culture, and others”.

The Statement reads that Georgia is one of the priority countries in Latvia’s development cooperation policy and that Latvia supports Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration and territorial integrity.

Following the signing ceremony, the two ministers held a meeting where ongoing issues relating to bilateral and multilateral cooperation were discussed. Zalkaliani thanked his Latvian colleague for his visit to Georgia 10 years after the Russia-Georgia war that was yet another proof of Latvia’s firm support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.
