In January–February 2026, Georgia imported 333.1 tons of live cattle worth $1.1 million, marking a 56.7% drop compared to the same period last year. Russia accounted for 39% of total imports, followed by Hungary, Belarus, Iraq, and Estonia.
Romania - last year’s leading supplier - is no longer on the list. In 2025 overall, Georgia imported 4,580 tons of cattle worth $16.3 million, with Russia also ranking first.
The decline comes amid growing animal health concerns in the region: Russia’s Novosibirsk region has declared a state of emergency due to rabies and pasteurellosis, while Belarus has temporarily restricted imports of livestock and animal products from several Russian regions. Notably, Belarus is one of Georgia’s main beef suppliers.
Georgia’s National Food Agency stated that to maintain epidemiological safety, up to 6 million veterinary procedures are carried out annually in the country.
