Georgia has officially approved the veterinary certificate required for exporting slaughter sheep to Algeria. The order, signed by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture on May 11, adds specific veterinary requirements that Georgian livestock must meet in order to access the Algerian market.
Under the new regulation, exporting live animals for slaughter will only be possible with an official veterinary certificate confirming that the animals are healthy, vaccinated, and compliant with the sanitary standards of the destination country. The minister’s order has already entered into force.
The move expands Georgia’s livestock export framework at a time when the sector is growing rapidly. In the first quarter of this year, sheep exports generated $6.9 million in revenue, a 111% increase compared to the same period last year.
The main export destinations remain Gulf and North African markets, with Saudi Arabia leading at $3.5 million, followed by Qatar ($1.6 million), Libya ($1.01 million), and Kuwait ($494,000).
